BuildingPoint Combines Complex Digital Models with the Real World
In a progressive world where our efforts are geared toward continual improvement, the advantages of digital modelling are clear; the benefits we gain are through the power of shared information. From executives and construction managers to engineers. Experienced or not. Surveyor, iron binders and controllers. Whatever the task or challenge. Regardless of the scenario.
BuildingPoint is a concept that connects, simplifies and enables; a concept that provides collaborative, dynamic opportunity across the design landscape, and enables on-site workflow which is paperless, transparent, organised and detailed. This is a concept that provides building owners with robust tools for modern operations, maintenance and management.
- BuildingPoint is a concept that was developed by Trimble a number of years ago yet only now introduced to the Scandinavian market. Throughout the development of its BuildingPoint product, Trimble has kept complex technology hidden behind a user-friendly interface. The power of the solution is its ability to enable users to get on with their core activity – building - without compromise. Complex tools and awkward interfaces are intimidating and prove to be the biggest obstacles to adoption of new technology and process change - uncertainty is unsettling and can occur throughout the value chain. However, if digital tools are adopted to play a supporting role and deemed to make a positive impact by providing confidence in results throughout the process, it's amazing what possibilities can be achieved; today's digital tools are so advanced they can lift any project, says Niklas Lindwall Group CEO of the EDRMedeso Group and Chairman of newly established BuildingPoint Scandinavia.
From Dream to Reality
Lindwall says that the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (Statens Vegvesen) ran its first "drawing-free" project as recently as last year. Right now, they have over a hundred on-going. Projects where the approval process is based purely on a digital model. It would hardly have gone without a singularly holistic approach?
BuildingPoint Scandinavia’s sister company, EDRMedeso, has for many decades provided digital tools that have made it possible for designers to create high quality models with a precise level of detail. This is something Lindwall believes can be adapted for use by the construction industry; the key is to be able to use data in a broader, more practical way, during construction and throughout a building’s lifetime.
- Trimble Connect is a tool that runs smoothly on newer iOS and Android devices. The easy-to-use interface gives you instant access to up-to-date, relevant and accurate data, wherever you may be, customized to the tasks you encounter”, says Lindwall.

Deep Interaction
However, the Chairman points out that successful digital interaction and workflow is about a great deal more than being able to make detailed models. The model must be appropriate to the project.
- With the introduction of BuildingPoint, I’m pretty certain we will no longer be considered a provider of drawing tools, but will become a partner that provides our customers with comprehensive solutions, solutions that through efficient distribution and a user-friendly interface, simplify and enhance collaborative workflow across the board, says Lindwall.
Data that knows where it is
Peter Hammarbäck, Managing Director of BuildingPoint Scandinavia and CEO of Trimtec – EDRMedeso’s partner in Sweden - says technology makes it possible to combine complex models within the built environment, mapped alongside physical, real-world data. This is achieved by connecting a phone to Trimble SiteVison, a satellite receiver that tracks the user’s precise location.
- You can place the virtual model "on top" of the physical location and capture the hybrid view through the phone’s camera. This allows the user to see how the building harmonizes with the proposed design. Instant, accurate and informative. In short, this is a solution that provides understanding, removes any doubt and creates confidence, avoiding expensive mistakes”, says Hammarbäck.
The visible effect on the business that the introduction of BuildingPoint Scandinavia now makes is that they will also deliver practical hardware solutions of this kind, Field Technology and Mixed Reality. Hardware that allows you to use the data via the company's known and dearest applications, but also generate correct data out in fields for use in model.

Interaction and workflow
For many years, Trimtec has provided hardware and software for scanning, measurement and layout. Hammarbäck believes this experience and expertise complements EDRMedeso’s extensive knowledge of BIM and digital engineering with world leading tools like Tekla Structures. He explains that many entrepreneurs and consulting engineers have already used Trimble Connect, SiteVision and virtual reality to break down knowledge silos and collaborate in the development of new and often groundbreaking techniques.
Many users see the potential of the solution only increasing over time. “Veidekke uses Trimble Connect constantly, both as a powerful handheld information carrier and as a comprehensive, inclusive interaction tool, something that has provided some projects with a heavily data-centric approach. They are one of several organisations pushing the boundaries in terms of what these tools - combined with our virtual reality solution - can provide. Not just in terms of quality, sustainability, resources and shorter build time, but also for health, the environment and safety”, says Hammarbäck.
Now "reality" is expanding. One of the first hardware solutions released by BuildingPoint Scandinavia is the Trimble XR10, a helmet with integrated HoloLens2 from Microsoft. A solution that lowers the user threshold further, the application in the field increases and opens the way for skilled professionals in-situ at the construction site to add critical information and experience-based knowledge from physical reality to the model. However, BuildingPoint's ambitions do not stop there.
- To me, the most important undertaking we make with this launch is to connect engineers closer and more efficiently to the work they do on site every day. BuildingPoint is about solving the needs of the industry through digital tools. New and old. Mixed Reality finally brings the value of solid digital models to their maximum, says Chairman Lindwall, who is delighted that Marcus Rodriguez has agreed to lead BuildingPoint in Norway and Denmark, a change that will have no effect on the management of the Swedish part of the group.
Wide experience and insight
Rodriguez has a background in prefabricated building components gained at Contiga, amongst other experience. He began working at EDRMedeso nine years ago and held the position of consultant for three years followed by five years as client manager. For the past eighteen months he has led the company's Norwegian office, and most recently he has held the same role at the company’s Danish operation.
- In the near future, we will review our entire organization and look at how we can effectively improve processes and value chains that currently appear somewhat peripheral, with the data that already exists. We believe that through efficient utilization of today's tools and the data they generate will make a big difference when it comes to consuming materials, transportation needs, sustainability and carbon footprint. We always deliver detailed models of the highest quality. When These can be used in a larger and wider perspective, it will give birth to new ideas, experiences and working methods. In other words, technology carries a potential that can make everyone more efficient everyday, elevate the entire built environment and enrich the community. Economical, quality and in one sustainability perspective, Rodriguez concludes.
Facts:
The Trimtec Group
The Trimtec Group was established in its current form in 2002, employs 49 wise heads and sales last year for 137 million Swedish kroner. The group consists of the companies Trimtec AB and BuildingPoint Sweden. Both are authorized distributors of Trimble's products in Sweden. Both when it comes to equipment and software. For use in, inter alia, scanning, geolocation of data and digital design tools. For both horizontal and vertical buildings.
Trimtec has always emphasized being open and present. For that reason, they have six service offices spread all over Sweden. From Umeå in the north to Malmö in the south. All six offer everything from simple Phone support for Level 3 support, which is Trimbles highest level of service. The goal is to provide customers maximum security and benefit from the products sold at all times.
