Spæncom and Aarsleff take the next step in the digitization of project collaboration
In recent years, Spæncom has taken major digital steps where the use of BIM technology has a prominent role. These digital solutions provide customers with great benefits, helping to eliminate errors and misunderstandings.

For the 15,000 sqm expansion of Chr. Hansen's head office and research and development facilities in Hørsholm, Spæncom agreed with the turnkey contractor Per Aarsleff A / S that the design should be 100% digital in a 3D model
At Per Aarsleff A / S, one of the driving forces has been VDC coordinator Erik Stender Hornstrup, and he is extremely satisfied with theoutcome.
"It's a different way of working, but it worked really well that both the engineering company, the material manufacturers and us - as a contractor - could comment directly in Trimble Connect, which is an open collaboration tool that connects the right people with the right data at the right time,” says Erik Stender Hornstrup.
"It has been a huge advantage over the normal procedure on paper and in pdfs, and we got rid of a lot of emails back and forth between the participants." He says that the communication was both faster and more precise by the actors being able to zoom directly into the area they were working on and also be able to see each other's comments.
“
With the new digital models, we become more efficient, collaborate better, reduce waste of resources and increase the quality of construction.
- Kim Schmeltz, Spæncom
In the project, the actors chose to divide the buildings into separate floors to maintain a good overview and control at all times. "It was a clear advantage to divide the project into floor packages and it is definitely the future to model in 3D, there is no doubt about that", says Erik Stender Hornstrup and continues: "You can quickly see the challenges one by one – does it fit or not? We have never experienced having to cut so little in the elements on the construction site, and that is an incredible advantage.”
He says that before the start-up he was excited about whether Spæncom could handle getting so much data into the one model. “The collaboration has been great, and we have been very positive about how Spæncom has handled the entire process, like all the comments that were posted - which Spæncom continuously followed up on, but also things related to project coordination and responsibilities.”

At Spæncom, BIM manager Kim Schmeltz is also satisfied with the process: “With the new digital models, we become more efficient, collaborate better, reduce waste and increase the quality of construction. However, it is absolutely crucial that we get involved in the projects early, as the project must be launched in collaboration with the various stakeholders. Then we bring our specialist knowledge and experience into the project for our customers and their advisers, and with these BIM tools we can arrive at the optimal setup for the construction, and we are very eager to analyze what exactly it is that gives the customer the most value in the end.”
The next step is that all future projects will have a live model in Trimble Connect, which all the participants can access from day 1. This way, the parties can continuously see the changes that are made on the basis of comments. That way everyone sees the same thing, and one can immediately respond to issues that need to be changed.
