Vikenconsult AS is taking BIM to the Real world with the Trimble RPT600
Is there a faster way to get the BIM models into the real world than using drawings and measuring tape ? That was the question Norwegian consultant company Vikenconsult AS were asking themselves.
As an engineer, and the Managing Director in Vikenconsult, Magnus Svensen is used to working in the digital domain with highly detailed BIM models. Working on large projects to deliver project engineering for heating, water and sanitation, his team also works closely with contractors which install piping for sprinkler systems for fire protection and other utilities.
Until now, the digital 3D models created by Vikenconsult have been used to create drawings, which the contractor would use on the construction site to measure out where to install brackets and other items. This works well, but the manual nature of the process is prone to error, and it also takes time and effort. However, Vikenconsult has identified that there are faster ways to do this, and a significant potential to increase the quality of the process.
From Digital to the Real World
This is where a Total Station comes into the picture. With the 3D model loaded into the FieldLink software, Magnus can easily set up the Trimble RPT600 and use the software to identify the position of the RPT600 and use the laser to identify or measure positions in the building. In this way, they are taking the digital model into the real world, without going through the extra steps of a drawing and manual measurements. This allows his team to work with confidence and provide the contractors with accurate measurements for the installation of piping and similar systems.
Why Trimble and BuildingPoint?
They found the RPT600 to be easy to use, setup is quick and automatic with the press of a button, and when Vikenconsult got the hardware, they were able to get started right away, even before the BuildingPoint team showed up for the Introduction Training. With the additional training and support Vikenconsult can deploy these solutions in a project from day one. “We chose a Total Station from Trimble and BuildingPoint, after reviewing the market, because of their well integrated product portfolio of software and integrated hardware, as well as their cloud solutions”, Magnus says.
Next steps
When asked, Magnus says he is confident that this will be a successful part of their workflow and services to their customers and he is already looking forward to potential next steps – like introducing Mixed Reality with the XR10 with Hololens2 to the team!
